In a survey of 525 street and shelter dogs across four Indian climate zones, ticks were found on 53 percent of them, and on 80 percent of those sampled in Mumbai. The genus doing most of that work is Rhipicephalus, the brown dog tick, which lives and breeds indoors as happily as it does in a park. The infections it carries in Indian dogs include ehrlichiosis and babesiosis, and it is also how hepatozoonosis reaches a dog.
Which ticks are on Indian dogs
A survey published in Parasites and Vectors in 2011 collected 832 ticks from the dogs it sampled at four sites: Sikkim, Ladakh, Delhi, and Mumbai. Rhipicephalus was the most common genus found, and Haemaphysalis came second.
Where you live changes which one you meet. Haemaphysalis turned up only in Sikkim, on just over half of the infested dogs there. Rhipicephalus was the urban tick, more common in Mumbai and Delhi than in the rural sampling sites, which fits what is known about it globally.
That urban preference matters more than it sounds. The Tropical Council for Companion Animal Parasites (TroCCAP), which writes guidelines specifically for tropical countries rather than adapting European ones, describes the brown dog tick as the most common tick infesting dogs across the tropics. It also notes that in tropical conditions the brown dog tick can complete more than one generation in a year, which is not true of it everywhere.
So the tick most Indian pet parents are dealing with is a species that thrives in cities, reproduces faster in heat, and doesn't need a forest or a field to survive.
How common are ticks on dogs in India
The 53 percent figure travels without the next paragraph attached to it, so here it is.
Those 525 dogs were 77 percent strays and 23 percent shelter dogs. Not one of them was an owned pet. The study reached them through Animal Birth Control and rabies vaccination programmes, in which street dogs are impounded, vaccinated, neutered, and released where they were found.
So 53 percent is a real, measured, peer-reviewed figure about street and shelter dogs in Sikkim, Ladakh, Delhi, and Mumbai in 2008. It isn't a statement about your dog, and anyone presenting it as "half of Indian dogs have ticks" has skipped a line in the methods.
The city breakdown is worth having anyway, because the spread is enormous. Mumbai came in at 80 percent of 162 dogs, Delhi at 75.3 percent of 162, Sikkim at 17 percent of 101, and Ladakh at 11 percent of 100. Ladakh sits at roughly 3,000 metres and is arid. Mumbai is tropical. The gap between them is climate, and it tells you something useful about your own city without needing a study in it.
Where ticks attach, and why you keep missing them
TroCCAP lists the places to check: ears, armpits, the groin, around the eyes, and between the toes. Those are the spots with thin skin and poor airflow, and they're also the spots most people skip during a quick once-over.
Small ones are hard to see. TroCCAP notes that an infestation of one or a few ticks, especially small larvae, can go unnoticed on a dog entirely.
Adult females are the opposite problem. A female hard tick expands as she feeds, and the Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC) puts the increase at as much as 100 times her original weight before she detaches. That's the swollen thing people find and assume is a growth. Males stay flat even after feeding, because their dorsal shield covers the whole body and doesn't allow the expansion.
If you have found one engorged female, look harder. She got there somehow.
The damage a tick does on its own
The disease risk gets all the attention, and the direct damage is worth understanding on its own.
Ticks cause irritation and itching around the attachment site. Heavy burdens, particularly of adult ticks, can drain enough blood to cause anaemia, which TroCCAP describes as severe blood depletion in high infestation levels. Bites can get infected, and CAPC records that secondary infections at the attachment site can progress to sepsis.
CAPC also describes tick paralysis, an ascending flaccid paralysis caused by a neurotoxin that females of some tick species produce while feeding. The tick species it names as the usual cause are North American ones, and no Indian data on this turned up in targeted searching, so it sits in the literature without an Indian figure attached.

What Indian ticks carry
The 2011 survey ran PCR on all 525 blood samples from those street and shelter dogs and found at least six tick-borne pathogens. Hepatozoon canis was the most common at 30 percent, followed by Ehrlichia canis at 20.6 percent, Mycoplasma haemocanis at 12.2 percent, Anaplasma platys at 6.5 percent, Babesia vogeli at 5.5 percent, and Babesia gibsoni at 0.2 percent. Across the whole sample, 261 of 525 dogs carried at least one of them.
Two things in that list surprise people.
The first is Hepatozoon canis, the most common finding, which a dog does not catch from a tick bite at all. It is transmitted when the dog eats an infected tick, usually while chewing at an itch. Grooming behaviour is the route.
The second is co-infection. Nearly 39 percent of the infected dogs carried more than one pathogen, and among the dogs with multiple infections, about half were carrying Hepatozoon canis and Ehrlichia canis together. The authors put the practical consequence plainly: finding one pathogen raises the possibility of others, and that may call for different clinical management.
Dogs with ticks on them were 3.3 times more likely to be carrying at least one pathogen than dogs without. Infected dogs also ran a lower packed cell volume on average, 29.7 percent against 35.8 percent in uninfected dogs, which is the anaemia showing up in the bloodwork before it shows up in the dog.
How fast can a tick give a dog a disease
The timings are what turn a tick check from a chore into a decision with a deadline.
CAPC states that Ehrlichia and Rickettsia species can be transmitted within three to six hours of tick attachment. For comparison, the bacterium behind Lyme disease can require 24 to 48 hours of feeding before it infects the host.
Ehrlichia canis was the second most common pathogen in the Indian survey. Those are minimum attachment times, not a grace period, so the only safe rule is to take a tick off the moment you find it.
Work out how to remove a tick from a dog before you need it, not while you're holding a pair of forceps with a squirming Labrador on your lap.
Why control here is year round
Seasonal treatment is the default in most Indian households. Ticks get noticed in summer, a spot-on gets bought, and by October everyone has forgotten about it.
TroCCAP's position for tropical countries is that dogs and cats should be protected from ectoparasites throughout the year. CAPC's is that all dogs should be treated year round and for life. Both bodies reach the same conclusion by different routes, and neither leaves room for a seasonal reading.
There is a second reason specific to the brown dog tick. Because it survives and breeds indoors, its numbers are not governed by what is happening outside your window. TroCCAP also points out that even dogs living mostly indoors get exposed regularly, at parks and at pet stores for grooming, bathing, or a nail trim. CAPC adds that brown dog ticks can be active in homes and kennels throughout the year, and that ticks, males in particular, transfer between pets living together.
No published tick season for India turned up in targeted searching for this article. The 2011 survey sampled June to September only, so it says nothing about November. Anyone stating confidently that ticks here are a summer problem is filling a gap the published data leaves open.

When the ticks are living in your house
Brown dog ticks are one of the few tick species that establish indoor populations. They get into cracks, behind furniture, along skirting, and into the gaps around kennel and crate joints.
CAPC's guidance on this is blunt. Once a home infestation with Rhipicephalus sanguineus is established, it may take several months to bring under control, and beyond treating the pet consistently, the services of a licensed exterminator are necessary to clear the building.
A female hard tick lays a single clutch of several thousand eggs and then dies. One missed female in a wardrobe corner is not a small problem, and it is why people who treat only the dog sometimes feel like they are losing.
When to call the vet
Signs of tick-borne disease are unhelpfully vague. CAPC lists fever, lethargy, low mood, poor appetite, and weight loss as the common presentation, with swollen lymph nodes sometimes, and pinpoint bleeding under the skin or nosebleeds where platelets have dropped. Eye problems including uveitis and retinal detachment have been reported.
Any of that, in a dog that has had ticks in the past few months, is worth a vet visit and a specific conversation about tick-borne disease. What that conversation should cover is in tick fever in dogs.
One expectation to set now: no vaccine against any of these tick-borne infections turned up in the sources used for this article. Prevention here means keeping ticks off the dog, month after month, which is a different kind of work from the vaccinations your vet gives on a schedule.

Frequently asked questions
Can my dog get ticks if it never leaves the flat?
The brown dog tick establishes indoor populations, so a flat that has had ticks can keep producing them without any outdoor source. TroCCAP also notes that mostly indoor dogs are exposed at parks and at pet stores for grooming, bathing, or nail trimming.
Are ticks worse in summer in India?
There is no published Indian study that this research could find establishing a tick season for the country. The 2011 four-city survey sampled June to September only, so it cannot answer the question. Both TroCCAP and CAPC recommend year round control regardless of season.
Do all ticks carry disease?
No, and there is no way to tell by looking. CAPC's position is that although the set of pathogens varies by species, all hard tick species should be treated as potential vectors. That is why removal speed matters more than tick identification.
How many ticks is a problem?
One is enough to transmit Ehrlichia within three to six hours. As a burden, TroCCAP treats heavy adult infestations as a cause of anaemia through blood loss, and notes that where there are hundreds of ticks, removing them by hand stops being practical and a fast acting systemic acaricide is the recommended route.
