What is pet sitting?

Pet sitting, as discussed here, means a carer looking after your pet in your home. Confirm whether the person will visit, stay overnight or follow another arrangement. The service name does not tell you how long someone will be present. You can compare pet care arrangements if you are also considering care away from home.

Meet before deciding. Bring the usual routine to that conversation, including the food instructions and where you keep the lead or litter supplies.

Agree the care arrangement

Confirm the dates, attendance times and location of care. Ask about any gaps in attendance and agree what happens if the sitter cannot come. Keep the answer specific to the arrangement you need, without treating a visit or an overnight stay as a promise of constant presence.

Discuss home access too. Agree where keys are collected and returned, and who the sitter should contact if access fails. If another family member is handling the handover, include them in that arrangement before the first visit.

You might choose to confirm these details in the same message as the dates. That is a practical way to keep the agreed arrangement together, without leaving someone to piece it together from separate conversations.

If access involves more than a front-door key, explain the other steps during the handover. That might mean agreeing where to meet a family member or which person to call at the entrance. Ask the sitter to raise any access question before you leave. Keep the arrangement limited to what you have actually agreed with the people involved.

Meet the person before deciding

Meet the prospective sitter and check references before agreeing the arrangement. Discuss the care your pet needs and let the person raise questions about the routine. A reference is something to check, without treating it as a guarantee about the care you will receive.

Use the meeting to explain familiar handling preferences and the existing exercise routine. Say what you mean in ordinary terms. A description of how your pet normally interacts gives the sitter more to work with than a broad label such as easygoing.

Hand over the usual routine

Write down the usual food and treats with their feeding instructions. Identify the actual food you are leaving. If fresh supplies will be needed, explain where you obtain them. Bring together any parts of the routine that different family members normally handle.

For a dog, explain the existing exercise instructions and where the walking supplies are kept. The guide to the dog's walking routine offers more detail if you need to discuss that routine before handing it over. Keep any new care decision separate from the instructions the sitter is receiving.

For a cat, make the cat's portion plan clear alongside the food details. Show the sitter where the litter supplies and other familiar items are kept. The handover should describe what is already agreed for your cat.

Keep the instructions together and walk through unclear points with the sitter. You don't need to create a separate document for every item, but the person taking over needs to be able to identify the routine you intend them to follow.

Make contact arrangements clear

Leave your emergency contact details and the vet's number, including the applicable out-of-hours contact. Ask the sitter to confirm that they have the information. Discuss who they should try to reach if you cannot answer, without assuming that an alternative contact has legal authority to make decisions.

Agree how updates will be sent and who should receive a message if plans change. If you use Nuzzy PetLife, keep the existing vet-visit history accessible while preparing the handover. Confirm directly what information the sitter needs you to supply.

Confirm the return arrangements

Agree how the final handover and key return will work. If someone else will receive the keys, make that arrangement clear to the sitter. Include what happens if your return plans change, so the person providing care knows whom to contact.

If care at home does not fit the arrangement you need, cat boarding is another option to discuss for a cat. Prepare the routine and emergency contacts before meeting whichever person will take over care.

Questions about pet sitting

What does a pet sitter do?

In the in-home arrangement described here, the sitter follows the care you agree for your pet. Hand over the usual food instructions, existing exercise routine and relevant supplies information. Confirm attendance separately; the term pet sitting does not itself establish continuous company or medical services.
